Therapy Fluffies

therapy fluffiesStudies show that petting a dog lowers stress levels, so the Wellness Center brought 10 certified therapy dogs to UC San Diego during Finals Week of Spring Quarter 2009.

We are hoping to make this a quarterly Finals Week tradition. So if you missed the Spring Quarter event or had so much fun that you'd like to come again, look for the therapy dogs on Library Walk in early December.

There were also many giveaways including the LiveWell UCSD eco-friendly sports bottles, CAPS pens and stress balls, CAPS highlighters, to-do list (whiteboard) magnets, and food.

Ross Szabo Presentation

On April 22nd, the Office of Student Wellness and Counseling and Psychological Services were proud to present Ross Szabo to UCSD students, staff, and faculty. Szabo, author of the book Behind Happy Faces came to talk on subject not easy to approach: mental health and illness. In tune with college life, Szabo has his own brand of humor to identify the disorders that are affecting college-age students all over the country.

Szabo’s challenge to students is to take away the stigma. This starts by changing how we define ourselves and the culture we live in. “It’s so cool to be myself as long as there is someone else like me.” Maintaining the illusion of normality is what prevents us from reaching out. “No one is normal. What we have made normal is not talking about being different.”

UC San Diego 1st Annual Nap-In

Next time you feel tired and sleepy during the day and want to buy some coffee, think again. UC San Diego sleep scientist Sara Mednick says you would be better off taking a nap instead.

THe Nap-In at the Price Center Ballroom was organized on National Napping Day, which takes place every year the day after the start of Daylight Saving Time.

“I think that we need to have a little more of a take-back the nap attitude,” Mednick told the audience in the ballroom. “So that’s what I’m here to do today.”

Project Wellness

Project Wellness is a new program by the Wellness Center to promote the wellness skills of all UCSD students. Each month, there will be a new component of wellness posted for discussion, with the most original and inspirational entry chosen to be our Project Wellness Winner. Winner will receive an iPod Shuffle & 3 runner-ups will receive a Body Composition Analysis by Student Health Services!
