Wellness Resources for Study Abroad Students

Studying abroad is a great opportunity for college students. Studying in a different country will introduce you to new customs, languages, experiences, and ways of life. It is important to remember to stay healthy so that you can benefit from everything your program has to offer.  Here are some tips and resources to use before (and during) your time studying abroad.

Wellness Tips for Students Studying Abroad

Here are some tips (courtesy of RN Central.com) to help you stay health and take care of your well-being while abroad:

  • Be aware that your host country may have different standards of sustainability than you are used to. Resources may be much more limited in your host country, so take care and reuse when possible.
  • Stay hydrated! It is really easy to get dehydrated when you are travelling (especially when you sit in air conditioned planes or hotel rooms for a long period of time). If you are unsure about the tap water, bring a reusable water bottle and buy a large water bottle (1-5 gallons) at a local grocery store to refill your reusable bottle, which you should take with you wherever you go.
  • Smoking is much more prevalent in other societies, but it doesn’t make it any healthier.  If you don’t smoke now, don’t pick it up while abroad!
  • Bring a travel-size first aid kit.  It might come in handy with all of the exploring you are going to do!
  • Make sure to stay up to date with prescriptions BEFORE you leave the US.

  • To save money and eat healthier, stock up on breakfast (fruit, bread, jams) and lunch (sandwiches) items, as well as snacks, from a local market and then eat out for dinner and try the local cuisine.
  • Homesickness is a typical symptom of being away from loved ones. Keep in touch through email or Skype, but also recognize that building relationships with people in your host country will help you overcome this part of your study abroad experience.
  • If you are traveling in a country where English is not the primary language, it will increase your command of the language and help you become adjusted if you make new friends in your host country. Understand, however, that it may take a little longer than usual to fit in.
  • Wear flip flops in shared bathrooms.
  • Hand washing will prevent you from getting most illnesses.  In addition, keep your hands away from your eyes, nose, and mouth.  These are places where viruses can get into your body. It is also a good idea to bring a small bottle of hand sanitizer that you can keep in your pocket and use right before meals.
  • Keep yourself and your partner protected by using condoms.
  • Many individuals in foreign countries walk or ride bikes to get around. Take advantage of this opportunity to work on your physical wellness!
  • It may be so exciting to be in a new place, but remember that you still need 7-9 hours of sleep each night while abroad too!
  • Go out in groups.  The threats facing women in the US are the same in different countries. Always be aware of your surroundings and be vocal if the situation becomes uncomfortable.
