After serving for many years as a full professor and director of the Department of Health Promotion at SDSU, Dr. Karen Calfas was selected to fill the newly creation position of Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Wellness, in which she oversees the expansion and promotion of the four-year-old Student Affairs Wellness Initiatives. Calfas manages the Wellness Cluster, an interdisciplinary group of student services that includes Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Health Services, the Sexual Assault Resource Center, Recreation, and the Office of Student Wellness. Calfas received her doctorate in 1990 from UCSD and her bachelor’s in 1985 from Pacific Lutheran University, in Tacoma, Wash. She has been a licensed psychologist in the state of California since 1993. |

Dr. Phelps completed his Bachelor's degree in Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley and his Ph.D. at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He completed his internship in the UC San Diego, Department of Psychiatry and did his Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Behavioral Medicine and Health Psychology at the San Diego Veterans Administration Medical Center. Prior to his current position, Dr. Phelps worked for ten years as a psychologist at UC San Diego Counseling and Psychological Services and was housed at Thurgood Marshall College. Currently he is a licensed psychologist in the state of California and holds a clinical faculty position in the Department of Psychiatry, UC San Diego School of Medicine. Brenda comes to the Student Wellness Cluster from Environmental Health and Safety where she was the Business Operations Manager responsible for leadership and management of daily operations for financial, administration and human resource functions. Brenda has an MBA from Athabasca University and an M.Ed. in Educational Administration and Leadership from Jones International University. Favorite Wellness Tip: Remember the 8 dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, social, occupational, financial, intellectual, and environmental. |
